Black Walnut and Curly Maple Winged Box

Description:

This winged box was turned from Black Walnut (Juglans nigra) and features and inset lid with a knob that was made from African blackwood (Dalbergia melanoxylon) that was salvaged from an old, discarded piano. The box itself is remarkably light and delicate, although not so light as to be fragile. The wings and box body have been turned to a thickness of about 1/8" or 3 mm in thickness. The lid was turned from a piece of nicely figured hard maple (Acer saccharum) and features a two-part ebony knob that has a simple curved profile on the outside and a decorative disk on the inside which features a textured flower that has been decorated with gold gilding. Finished with a blend of oil and varnish and then buffed to a semi-gloss finish, this box feels as good as it looks, and will only get better with time.
