This spherical box is turned from a nicely figured piece of Ambrosia Maple (Acer saccharinum) and sits on delicate base made from black walnut (Juglans nigra). The box itself features a loose friction fit - which means it stay together when handled but can be separated without too much difficulty. The seam between the two halves is decorated with a pair of burned grooves that do not detract from the almost perfect grain match between the halves. This spherical box was turned by hand, without the aid of any mechanical jigs and features an average wall thickens of about 4 mm providing an exceptionally light feel to the box when handled. This particular is not quite spherical, but the irregularity provides an appealing, organic feel. A shellac based friction finish enhances the natural depth and shimmer of the wood, and has been buffed to a pleasant shine that still provides a natural wood feeling. Like all wooden balls, this spherical box is almost mesmerizing to hold and handle. The base has been turned and textured on both the top surface and its underside, providing a little extra surprise and interest when the box is picked up.
