This pair unique bowls are actually turned from a single laminated board that was created by carefully ripping a blistered maple board and a black cherry board into strips that were then reassembling into a alternating pattern. Rings where then cut from this maple-cherry board and glued into a bowl shape that was then turned to its final form. The striped bowl was created by assembling the rings in the same orientation as they were cut, while the checker board bowl was created by turning every-other ring 180 degrees. Normally, bowls constructed with this technique have straight sides, but I prefer to turn them with a subtle, but distinct, catenary curve from the base to the rim which produces a much more elegant form. The bottom of each bowl has been decorated with a textured ring and several concentric groves the prove that the bottom was turned with as much care and attention as the rest of the bowl. Finished with several coats of danish oil and polished to a pleasant silky sheen, these bowls are as nice to hold and handle as they are to look at.
