This winged box was turned from Black Cherry (Prunus serotina) and features and inset lid with a knob that was made from ebony () that was salvaged from an old, discarded piano. The cherry itself is relatively straight grained, but does feature some lighter sapwood that on the very tips of the wings. The box itself is remarkably light and delicate, although not so light as to be fragile. The wings and box body have been turned to a thickness of about 1/8" or 3 mm in thickness. The lid was turned from a piece of nicely figured white ash () and features a two-part ebony knob that has a simple curved profile on the outside and a decorative disk on the inside which features a textured flower that has been decorated with gold gilding. Finished with a blend of oil and varnish and then buffed to a semi-gloss finish, this box feels as good as it looks, and will only get better with time.
