Black Cherry with Spalted Beech Inset Lid

Description:

This box is turned from a piece of black cherry (Prunus serotina) and features an inset lid made from nicely spalted piece of beech (Fagus grandifolia). The lid is thin and delicate, and fitted with a diminutive knob made from ebonized hard maple (Acer saccharum). The subtle, dome shape of the lid compliments the overall shape of the box. The bottom of the box is decorated with a texturing to provide a little surprise when the box is handled. The cherry body of the box has been finished with Danish oil and buffed to a pleasant satin sheen that provides protection while still giving unmistakable feel of wood. The cherry in this box has already started to develop the deep rich patina that cherry so famous for and will only get better with time. In contrast, the top of the lid has been finished with several coats of lacquer and buffed to a high gloss to emphasize the spalting zone lines. This box is the perfect place to keep your most precious earrings, cuff links, or other keepsakes.
