This elegant yarn bowl was turned from a piece of hard maple (Acer saccharum) and was subsequently textured and painted with sea green milk paint. The painted exterior always contrasts nicely with the wood interior, making the figure and features of the wood that much more interesting and impactful. The exterior has been textured with fine horizontal cuts from the base to within about 10 mm of the rim which has been left smooth. The milk paint was then applied and sanded back so that the peaks of the texture are wood. The form itself is simple, and unsophisticated, but feels so good in the hand, and in combination with the tactile nature of milk paint, and the textured surface, this bowl just begs to be handled. The enclosed rim of the bowl ensures that your yarn ball remains contained when you draw the yarn out through the graceful 'J' shaped slot during use. The bottom of the bowl does not have well defined foot, but does have a couple of subtle, raised rings that keep the form from wobbling. Top coated, inside and out with polymerized Tung oil, this bowl feels as good as it looks and will only get better with time.
