This square bowl was turned from a piece of hard maple (Acer saccharum) and measures almost 13.5" corner to corner, although the bowl itself is about 6" in diameter. The whole piece has been turned down to about 1/8" (or 3 mm) in thickness. The upper surface to the wings were then textured with radiating rows of oval dimples. The textured surface was pained black and then topped coated with with iridescent blue and gold paint. The back paint provides a pleasing contrast with wood interior of the bowl, while the iridescent paint provides considerable life and depth to the piece, changing colours depending the angle at which it is viewed. This is a beautiful, elegant piece that would look good and add an element of sophistication to virtually any living room or office
