This box is turned from a piece of highly figured silver maple (Acer saccharinum) and features an inset lid made from quarter sawn applewood (Malus spp). The lid is thin and delicate, and fitted with a diminutive knob made from ebonized hard maple (Acer saccharum). The subtle, dome shape of the lid compliments the overall shape of the box and almost magnifies the subtle features of the applewood. The bottom of the box has been decorated with some texturing to provide a little surprise when the box is handled. The maple body of the box has been finished with several coats of wiping varnish and buffed to a semi-gloss sheen that provides protection while enhancing the natural chatoyance (shimmer) of the curl and figure in the wood. In contrast, the top of the lid has been finished with several coats of lacquer and buffed to a high gloss to emphasize the depth of the darker applewood. This box is the perfect place to keep your most precious earrings, cuff links, or other keepsakes.
