17.5" Ambrosia Maple Salad Bowl

Description:

This large bowl was turned from a nicely colour piece of silver maple (Acer saccharinum) which had been infected by Amborsia beetles. In response to the beetles the tree produced the distinctive and attractive stripes in the wood, creating what is often referred to Ambrosia Maple. This particular bowl also features some heartwood that as well as some subtle curly figure that provide additional visual interest. The outside profile is a simple curve that features a raised cove at the rim that creates a distinct shadow line and provides the perfect place for your thumb when you pick the bowl up. The top of the rim is inward sloping and the inside is undercut to provide another shadow line and visual depth the piece. A ring foot at the base gives the form a little visual lift when it is sitting on a table or counter. Finished with several coats of food safe linseed oil and beeswax and then buffed to a pleasant sheen, this bowl is ready to go to work in your kitchen or as a center piece on your dining room table.
