This large plate or small platter is turned from an nice piece of soft maple (Acer saccharinum) that feaures both contrasting sapwood and sevearl steaks from abrosia beetles the burrowed into the tree when it was alive. The form itself is simple, and unadorned - letting the subtle beauty of the wood show through. THe rim is in-sloping and undercut providing a subtle shadow line that provides depth to the piece while also providing a natural and comfortable "thumb hold" when you pick the platter up. The bottom has been dished out slightly so the platter will always sit on a flat surface without rocking. Several concentric rings on the bottom provide a little visual interest when the piece is picked up and handled, and serve as proof that the bottom was turned and sanded with as much care as the rest of the piece. Finished with a food safe Linseed oil blend and buffed to a pleasant sheen, this piece feels as good as it looks and is ready to go to work in your kitchen
