This calabash style bowl is turned from a beautifully coloured piece of (Acer saccharinum). THis particular piece of wood features both the contrasting dark heart wood and several "Ambrosia" stripes which are the remnants of Ambrosia beetles boring into the living tree. This calibash bowl was turned to finished form while the wood was still wet and then slowly dried. During the drying process the wood has warped slightly producing a final bowl that is oval in shape with a pleasantly subtle undulating rim. Typical of the calibash form, the bowl is slightly enclosed and the rim slopes invitingly towards the interior. The bowl is perfect for serving buns on Sunday dinner or snacks during the big game. Finished with food safe linseed oil and beeswax and then buffed to a pleasant satin sheen, this bowls feels as good as it looks.
