This spherical box is turned from a piece of Marblewood (Zygia racemosa) and sits on a base made from Peruvian Walnut (Juglans spp.) which is also known as Nogal. The box itself features a friction fit - which means it stay together when handled, but is easily opened when desired. The seam between the two halves is decorated with a sublte groove that does not detract from the almost perfect grain match. This spherical box was turned by hand, without the aid of any mechanical jigs and features an average wall thickens of about 4 mm providing an exceptionally light feel to the box when handled. Like most marble wood, this piece of wood has some small hair line cracks that have been completely saturated with Cyanoacrylate glue (a type of 'super glue') which was also use to completely finish the outside of the box. Cyanoacrylate is the same finish that used on most hand turned pens to provide a beautiful, tough, high gloss finish that can stand up to everyday use. Like all wooden balls, this spherical box is almost mesmerizing to hold and handle. The base has been turned and textured on both the top surface and its underside, providing a little extra surprise and interest when the box is picked up. The perfect place to keep you most precious heirlooms, or as a conversation starter in your office.
