This 10" bowl was turned from a nicely spalted piece of soft maple (Acer saccharinum). The form itself is fairly simple to showcase the beauty and colour of the wood. The bowl features an in sloping rim and with a slight undercut that provides a subtle shadow line and adds visual depth to the piece. The bowl was turned to completion while the wood was still partially wet and then allowed to slowly dry. During the drying process the wood warped and moved, producing a final form that is definitely oval with a subtly undulating rim. The bottom has been dished out slightly to ensure that the bowl sites on any flat surface without rocking or spinning and has been decorated with some concentric rings that demonstrated that the bottom of the bowl was turned with as much care as the rest of the bowl. Finished with food safe linseed oil and beeswax and then buffed to a pleasant satin sheen, this bowls feels as good as it looks and will only get better with time.
