This nested pair of salad bowls was turned from Eastern Larch (Larix laricina) which is also known as Tamarack. While not often used for utilitarian wood turning, the piece of wood was given to me by a family who had a special connection to the tree it came from. This particular piece of wood features a substantial knot that is clearly visible in both bowls. On the small bowl, it produced some very interesting figure, but on the large bowl it appeared as a substantial crack that was re-enforced with three inlaid butterflied made from black cherry (Prunus serotina). Both bowls have been finished with several coats of food-safe Linseed oil and then buffed to pleasant sheen. They should be ready to go to work in the family's kitchen for years to come.
