This 13" salad bowl was turned from black cherry (Prunus serotina) and features a small patch of lighter sapwood. The outside of the bowl has been painted with blue over black milk paint to give depth and richness to the outside colour. Milk paints provide a durable, food safe, wonderfully tactile surface that still lets the grain of the wood telegraph through the finished piece. The form itself is simple but elegant. The outside profile is a simple curve that features a raised and textured cove at the rim and a single bead. The bead creates a distinct shadow line and the cove provides the perfect place for your thumb when you pick the bowl up. The top of the rim is inward sloping and the inside is undercut to provide another shadow line and visual depth the piece. A ring foot at the base gives the form a little visual lift when it is sitting on a table or counter, while texturing and several concentric rings serve as proof that the bottom of the bowl was turned with as much are and attention to detail as the rest of piece. Finished with several coats of linseed oil and then buffed to a pleasing satin sheen, this bowl is ready to go to work in your kitchen or dining room.
