This natural edge bowl was turned from a piece of black cherry (Prunus serotina) that was harvested in the winter and turned within a couple of days. Harvesting wood in the winter ensures that the bark is tight and should remain attached to the sapwood, and turning immediately after being harvested ensures that the sapwood remains as white as possible to maximize the contrast with the darker hardwood. This bowl is fairly thin, but not so thin as to be delicate or fragile. The bottom is simple, subtle pedestal that will ensure the bowl sits a on a flat surface without rocking while also providing a little visual lift to the form. Finished with Danish oil and buffed to a pleasant gloss, the finish enhances the wood and the subtle details while still providing that unmistakable feel of wood. This bowl will only get better with age as the wood develops the the rich deep colour that cherry is so prized for.
