Shedua is a tropical hardwood that is native to western Africa. It is a moderately sized tree that reaches 50m in height with trunk diameter of about a meter.
Shedua wood has a high natural luster and ranges in colour from yellow-brown to chocolate brown with dark grey or black stripes. Shedua has a moderate course texture, and often has attractive figure. The sapwood of shedua is thick , yellow-white in colour and is clearly demarcated from the heartwood.
Shedua often has a high silica content making it hard on cutting edges.
