Honey Locust (Gleditsia triacanthos)

Description

A hard, open grained wood with wavy, interlocking grain pattern. The heart wood of honey locust when freshly cut is a vibrant pink colour that mellows to a orange brown with age and exposure to light. The sap wood of honey locust is light yellow and is clearly demarcated from the heart wood.

Honey locust is rarely available commercially, but the popularity of this tree as an ornamental in urban settings means that wood is regularly available as trimmings and occasionally complete trees.

The interlocking and reversing grain of honey locust means that tear out can be a problem with hand and power tools. It turns, sands and finishes well.
